Nine suspects have been detained by the Western Cape police in the townships of Nyanga and Khayelitsha on suspicion of possessing weapons and ammunition.
When they stopped and searched a suspicious vehicle on Sihlangu Avenue, the Nyanga Crime Prevention Unit.
A 23-year-old driver of the vehicle, according to the police, tried to elude the officers but was apprehended right away.
They” seized a 7.65 pistol with ammunition when they searched the motor vehicle.” According to the police spokesperson Joseph Swartbooi, the 23-year-old man was detained on suspicion of possessing a prohibited firearm and ammunition.
Swartbooi claimed that more arrests occurred in Khayelitsha in an unrelated incident.
” AnR5 assault rifle and three 9mm Norinco pistols with ammunition were seized after they searched the property and approached an address in Sector 6 S Block in Khayelitsha.” On suspicion of possessing illegal firearms and ammunition, they detained eight suspects.
Once charged, the suspects are anticipated to appear in the magistrates ‘ courts in Khayelitsha and Athlone.
