The South African Weather Service ( SAWS ) is issuing an alert and urging caution in light of a heatwave that has begun and is anticipated to last until Thursday, November 23, 2023, as residents of Northern KwaZulu-Natal experience sweltering temperatures on Monday, December 20.

The interior and western regions of KwaZulu-Natal ( KZN), according to SAWS, may experience extremely high temperatures. The following areas have been designated as being particularly vulnerable to the heat:

  • Newcastle
  • Ladysmith
  • Dannhauser
  • Utrecht
  • Underberg
  • Vryheid
  • River Mooi

Additionally, SAWS has strongly cautioned against any potential risks during this particularly hot time. Heat-related illnesses like hyperthermia and heatstroke are more common in residents. Other potential effects include dehydration and feelings of low energy.

Please be aware that it will harm your pets if you leave them outside in the heat without providing them with adequate hydration and shelter.
