Max Verstappen won the triple Formula One world championship on Friday in the only practice session of a Qatar Grand Prix weekend, according to DOHA, October 6( Reuters ).
The Red Bull driver has the first opportunity to win the championship at the Lusail circuit before Sunday’s main event thanks to a 100km race on Saturday night.
In a session with desert sand being blown onto the track by whirling and gusting winds as the sun set, Verstappen set heist time of one minute 27.428 seconds, 0.34 seconds faster than Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz.
After leading with four minutes to go, Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc finished third, followed by Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin and Sergio Perez of Red Bull.
Mathematically speaking, Perez is the only competitor for the title besides Verstappen, but the Mexican has six rounds left and a maximum of 180 points to gain.
While Sunday’s night race will be significantly cooler, the session was held in track temperatures of about 38 degrees Celsius.
” It’s very warm, but naturally it cools down a bit after that.” Verstappen earlier told reporters that no matter what you do in FP1( practice ), it’s still difficult and a little risky to qualify.
” For me, it’s a little unfortunate because I believe it would be amazing to have some( sessions ) to properly set up the car and feel completely at ease entering qualifying for everyone to get the most out of it on this track.
The sprint is the main event on Saturday, and the grid positions for that race are decided by a separate” shout.”
Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes, who won the race when Qatar last hosted one in 2021, finished third in practice, followed by George Russell, the team’s eighth-place finisher.
