According to Portuguese media, Marina Machete, a trans woman, won the Miss Portugal beauty pageant for the first time and will face off against another transgender woman in El Salvador to win Miss Universe.

The Miss Portugal award was given to Machete, a 28-year-old flight attendant, on Thursday in Borba, southeast Evora.

Before winning the title, she posted on social media,” Proud to be the first trans woman to compete for Miss Universe Portugal.”

She continued,” For years, I was unable to compete, but now I am honored to be among this outstanding group of finalists.”

Rikkie Kolle, a 22-year-old Dutchwoman, became the first trans woman to win the Miss Netherlands title in July.

Angela Ponce of Spain, the first trans woman to run for the Miss Universe title in 2018, will be succeeded by Machete and Kolle.
