The majority of OpenAI’s employees threatened to leave the company on Monday morning if the board did n’t remove former CEO Sam Altman and former president Greg Brockman. About 500 workers, including several executives, signed the letter, according to Wired and Kara Swisher.

OpenAI employs 700 people, according to Swisher. On X early on Monday, several of them wrote that” OpenA I is nothing without its people,” including Chief Technical Officer Mira Murati ( who held the company’s top position on an interim basis for less than a weekend ).

The board’s decision to fire Altman on Friday afternoon sparked a series of events that culminated in the letter to the board. Altman was n’t” consistently honest in his communications with the board, hindering its ability to exercise its responsibilities,” according to the panel. The board believed it lacked” confidence in his ability to continue leading OpenAI” as a result. Brockman announced his resignation as chairman “based on today’s news” to the OpenAI staff in an email on Friday.

Altman was fired as a result of” a breakdown in communication,” not “malfeasance or anything related to our financial, business, safety, or security/privacy practices,” according to Chief Operating Officer Brad Lightcap in an internal memo that was later leaked.

In an effort to be reinstated to their previous positions, Altman and Brockman held crunch talks with the board of OpenAI over the weekend. However, the former CEO and chairman did not prevail in those discussions. Emmett Shear, a former CEO of Twitch, was chosen by the board to serve as interim chief executive of OpenAI.
