After a two-year hiatus, the long-distance train service was resumed by the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa’s ( Prasa ) Mainline Passenger Services ( MLPS) division.

In a post on platform X on social media, Prasa acknowledged the operational and infrastructure difficulties.

Despite these problems, Prasa reported that on Friday morning, the train arrived in Wellington without incident. However, the trip had to be temporarily stopped because Kraaifontein and Muldersvlei’s overhead wires were stolen just after midnight, disrupting the Wellington metro service.

Prasa pledged to work with Transnet to create efficient strategies against cable theft and to revitalize its long-distance services. Travel between Gauteng, Durban, and Cape Town is now made easier thanks to the intercity rail operation, which was suspended in 2021.
