Due to the peculiar circumstances and twist of events that seemed to follow him, the villagers referred to him as” the Thabo Bester of Venda ,” but Azwinndini Richard Mamali has actually passed away. The man who is accused of murdering his ex-girlfriend in September of this year at Hamagidi, close to Thohoyandou, and of killing a man in the Thathe Vondo forest the following week, made sure that his life came to an abrupt end when he hanged himself in his holding cell just days after being detained and appearing in court.
At the time of our press release, the circumstances surrounding Mamali’s death were still unclear, but Col. Malesela Ledwaba, a spokesman for the Limpopo police, confirmed that inquiries are being conducted into the alleged suicide that occurred on Thursday, September 28, at around 5:00 in the morning at the Thohoyandou Police Station.
Since Ridodzula Mudzanani’s passing on the evening of September 3, Mamali( 27 ) had been running. Mamali, with whom Mudzanani allegedly shared two children, was reportedly encountered by her and a male friend. Mamali allegedly ran away from the scene when Mudzanani later screamed that she had been stabbed. The police started a manhunt to try and find him.
A man’s body was discovered in the Thathe Vondo forest a week after Mudzanani was killed( 8 September ). He had acid burns all over his body and was lying on his stomach while only partially clothed. His head was smashed in with rocks, his buttocks were amputated, and both of his wrists had been severed. He had also been shot as an empty cartridge, according to the police, and they had assumed Mamali’s body belonged to her because of the percussion cap of a pistol, her ID, driving license, among other personal items that had been discovered at the scene. However, as the investigation went on, it became clear that Mamali’s body was actually not his when his own ID was discovered inside his pockets.
The search for Mamali continued because the police had good reason to think that he was also to blame for the man’s brutal murder in the forest. Members of the Thohoyandou Task Team discovered him hiding out in the area on September 19 and arrested him at Mahwelereng, Zone 17 in Mokopane, Waterberg District. On September 26, he appeared in the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court on two murder counts and was placed under arrest. He wouldn’t live to see the next time he appeared, which was on November 2.
A thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding this incident has been ordered by the provincial police commissioner, Lt. Gen. Thembi Hadebe.
The case is currently being investigated by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate( IPID ), which was present at the scene. After his appearance in court, the IPID’s national spokesperson, Mr. Robbie Raburabu, stated that they had discovered Mamali had been helping the police with their investigation. He allegedly used a torn blanket to hang himself. When his body was found, it appears that there was nothing foreign in the cell.
Ms. Vhengani Mudzanani, Mamali’s distraught mother, pleaded for the family to be given some time to grieve.
