Siviwe Gwarube, the deputy chief whip, has requested an investigation into Parliamentary Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nkqakula.

Nkqakula and Amos Masondo, the National Council of Provinces’ chair, are charged with defrauding Parliament regarding Xolile George’s salary as secretary to Parliament.

According to The Sunday Times, George’s annual salary is inflated to R4.4 million rand.

This is twice the R2.6 million that a secretary of parliament ought to be making, according to Gwarube.

This violates transparency’s tenets. Given that we were asked to approve a motion stating that the secretary to Parliament will be earning R2.6 million, this goes against Parliament’s sound financial management.
