The fact that Meta Quest VR headsets can play PC VR games is one of their main selling points, but you must physically connect to the PC using a link cable. Virtual Desktop and other third-party workarounds enable wireless game streaming, but Steam has now unveiled an official solution.
You can continue to avoid cables like the plague by using the Meta Quest 2, 3, and Pro tool Steam Link, which wirelessly streams PC VR games directly from your Steam library to the headset. Although the free app is already available, Steam games have been streamed to smartphones, tablets, and TVs using it. It’s being made available for VR games for the first time.
There is a significant warning. You still need a powerful PC that can run expensive VR games, just like with Virtual Desktop. The link cable wo n’t be necessary, though. Cloud computing platforms may be able to support this service, but the outcomes are probably at best janky. The NVIDIA GTX970 GPU or better, 16GB of RAM, and Windows 10 or newer are suggested as PC specifications by Steam.
A 5GHz WiFi router with the headset and computer both connected to the same network is also required in addition to a PC. To begin using the Steam Link app, simply download it from the Quest store. For those who already use Virtual Desktop, this might not be the biggest deal ever, but anything that increases interest in Half Life: Alyx is a good thing.
